I will be speaking about the business of creating and operating a membership site at WordCamp Columbus / PodCamp Ohio on Saturday June 19. If you’re in the Ohio area and plan to attend, please look me up. It’s great to meet readers face to face.
My session will be lght on technology and heavy on planning and organization. In my client work I find many people have not thought through things like content strategy, content organization, navigation and even membership levels. I plan to spend most of the time discussing the things you should think about early in the process.
Here’s a brief outline of what I plan to cover:
1. Is a membership site right for your business? Debunking the hype.
2. Common types of membership sites.
3. How to develop your content strategy.
4. Resources (and links) to help you create a WordPress based
membership site.
There’s another membership related session conducted by John Cook who will be doing a hands-on session about how to integrate a membership area on your site. I hope our sessions are at different times so that I can see this one.
I was also pleased to see that Crystal Thies of Crystal Clear Buzz fame is conducting two sessions at the conference. Like many people I was not much of a LinkedIn user. But then I attended on of her webinars on how to use the service to make new business contacts. She really opened my eyes to the power of this service and I have been using her techniques ever since. Here sessions alone will be worth the trip.
The free conference and will be held from 8:30 until 5:30 at The Ohio State University Mendenhall Laboratory. Directions are available in the link above. This year the WordCamp and PodCamp organizers decided to combine the event rather than have two similar events at different times. Good move on there part. We have very few nice summer days here in the Buckeye state, so why not use only one.
It looks like the turnout is going to be good with over 250 registered to date. It promises to be a real geekfest.
