There are literally thousands of excellent free WordPress Themes, but be very cautions about where you get yours. In the past week two new clients have asked us to help them with sites that were built with free themes, both of which contained encoded links that pointed to some pretty nasty sites. In both cases our clients were totally unaware.
Both of them obtained their themes from sites other than the WordPress Repository. Bad idea. But it’s an easy mistake to make. Perform a Google search on the term “free wordpress theme” and you will see hundreds of sites. Often the official WordPress Repository is not in the top five.
I recorded a quick test to see what happens when we examine a free theme from one of these sites. The results may surprise you. Have a look:
Bottom line…only download free themes from the official WordPress Repository. They make sure all themes on their site are free of hidden encoded links.
